David Fleming, group senior vice president of Genzyme Corporation and a 1970 College of Wooster graduate as well as a current member of Wooster’s Board of Trustees, will present “Healthcare Costs and Healthy Behavior” at the James R. Wilson Lecture in Business Economics on Wednesday, Feb. 28. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, begins at 7:30 p.m. in Gault Recital Hall of Scheide Music Center (525 E. University St.).
Genzyme is a world leader in biotechnology research with more than 8,500 employees and 15 manufacturing facilities around the world. Fleming, who majored in history at Wooster, is an expert on healthcare delivery policy and Medicare reform. He will talk about the strategic use of healthcare resources, including the role of technology and patient lifestyle choices.
Fleming joined Genzyme in 1984. He oversees worldwide operations and distribution for the Genzyme Diagnostics business unit. He is also responsible for corporate initiatives, including e-business strategy and payment. Prior to Genzyme, Fleming held general management, sales, and marketing positions during 11 years at Baxter International with an emphasis on diagnostics, therapeutics, and international business development. He began his career as a high school teacher and later earned an M.B.A. from Pepperdine University.
The James R. Wilson Lecture Series in Business Economics brings business and financial leaders to the Wooster campus to share their insights with students, faculty, and the broader community. The series is supported by the James R. Wilson Fund for Business Economics, established in 2001 by a gift from James R. and Linda R. Wilson. Previous speakers have included Peter Guber, CEO of Mandalay Entertainment; Donald Kohn of the U.S. Federal Reserve System; Morton Kamien, professor of entrepreneurship and venture capital fund advisor; and Katharine Lee Reid, former director of The Cleveland Museum of Art.
